FVPFA Junior Program

The club currently enjoys a great proportion of junior members, who mainly participate in our club-hosted poultry shows and fairs.  We are looking to expand the activities our  club offers for juniors.  We are planning to use multiple approaches to learning to provide education while enjoying time with others who enjoy the same hobby.

The proposed program will start in January 2012 with numerous activities and events.  These will include clinics, workshops, tours and competitions.  Juniors may pick and choose which events they participate in and should be accompanied by an adult.  The program is open to all members over six years of age.

A major part of this new Junior Program will be the introduction of open showmanship classes in club-hosted poultry shows.  Showmanship is used to evaluate participants on their knowledge of their particular birds and poultry in general, including  biology and husbandry.  Showmanship is very popular in the United States and a few locations in Canada.  Open showmanship classes are divided by participant's age and experience to ensure a fair level of competition.

We have planned a few clinics and events to date.  These include:

Introduction & Planning meeting, including Breed Selection - January 21, 2012- DONE

Incubation & Brooding- March 3, 2012- Clayton Botkin will be presenting.

Show Preparation Clinic- Late May/Early June 2012

Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows CountryFest-Open Show and Showmanship Competition- July 2012

Abbotsford Agrifair- Open  Show and Showmanship Competition- July/August 2012

FVPFA Winter Show- Open Show and Showmanship Competition-October 2012

A final year-end wrap-up for juniors in late November.

We will host more showmanship competitions if there is interest from the kids.  Other activities will include a youth photo & art contest at the 2012 Winter Show, making educational posters for our FVPFA display and making educational displays which can be entered in the summer fairs for cash prizes.  We are also planning to help juniors source show quality birds from our other members to keep them in competition in the open poultry shows and, hopefully, win awards.  Enrolment in the junior program is free with the junior or family membership, but we do ask for their participation in return.

If your child is interested in joining the youth program, please send us an e-mail at secretary@fvpfa.org with your name and the name and age of your child.
